"You know who I am" he said.
The speaker was an Angel of some sort, David looked up at his face smiling.
"Remind me... no wait, you're Urian" He was dazed of course, he lay back onto the cool grass to listen to the breeze and the grasshoppers. At peace.
"And you're here to give me some good news"
The Seraphim seemed annoyed, that was unusual in a Garden of Paradise. He shook his broken wings in frustration and scowled, this Man knew less about what was going on than him. Urian wasn't pretty when he scowled, not any more. His face, once a picture of near perfect male beauty was now, somehow middle aged, and his hair, still short and slightly spiked had at some point turned a silvery grey.
"No, its not good news. David, we have to leave, something is very wrong"
"Urian" he was still smiling, his eyes closed now, like he was trying to block out what was being said "Why on earth would we leave this place, everyday I wake up and its as beautiful as the first time, the sky is pure blue, the air is so fresh the..."
"LISTEN. There is no-one here anymore David, everyone has moved on but no-one new has joined us in the last hundred years. There's just no-one here"
"I'm here" the Man opened his eyes, brow furrowed he looked up at Urian standing over him now with a worried expression. "Who else isn't here"
"Can you even remember them David?"
"Of course..." A pause, then a dawning realisation, the first of many, each more terrible than the last. "I, no wait, its...Urian where are they?"
"You can't remember because they've moved on from this Paradise into a new life, you haven't, which is odd enough, but the lack of newcomers is more troubling. David I've checked my book, no-one has come here in a hundred years, not one soul, I thought something must be wrong so I went to the border"
"A hundred years, has it been that long since we've had company?"
" I went to the Border and its crumbling, its falling away" Now this did shock the Man out of his daydreaming, he stood to face the Angel, still looking up as the Seraphim was taller by some way.
"Are you sure"
"I know the borders of my own Garden mortal, dont question what I say" he snapped.
"Dont tell me the borders are falling away and expect me not to get upset, Yahwey wouldn't abandon us without saying something, of course I'm going to question it, it can't happen, not while we're both here, I still remeber that much..."
"SILENCE. You remember too much, and understand nothing. We have to leave, now. We're going back into Metropolis, now"
David shook his head, he was uneasy, very. It was a feeling he'd grown accustomed to going without for a good 800 years.
"No Urian, I can't go back."
"Why?"
"I, cant remember, Urian please"
"David" The Seraphim grabbed the man by the shoulders, shook him. Their first physical contact since the Angel had welcomed the man with an embrace all those centuries ago, and now it was coming to this, two beings, each trying to keep the other calm. "We must leave, or this place will fall apart around us and we'll be destroyed." David could only shake his head and sink into the Seraphims arms.
"Urian, I can't remember what's out there, but I know its bad"
"You're right Man" He replied, "Its ancient and awsome and you probably wont survive, and I can't tell you what's there. But if you stay here you WILL face oblivion."
The two of them talked a while longer and headed out to the edges of the Paradise, it was still beautiful but its edges where wearing thin, the lines and shapes were not so strong at the edge of the garden, its reality had begun to distort, to falter. They walked up to the House of Marble, they had spent a dozen lifetimes there on the steps, playing Stones and talking, wishing away their time in paradise, waiting for David to move on. Now as the sun of their reality began to set for the final time, David and Urian walked slowly away from the House, its columns, sensing the loss, turned and fell, crashing without sound, its roof piling in violently, silently. Rubble bounced away. David stooped to pick a piece of the Marble.
"Leave it" said the Angel, not even looking back, the Man's hand went into his pocket.
"Fine".
They stood on the edge of the garden and watched sad eyed as the sky slowly cracked open and began to fall like great blue shards and leaves, swimming slowly through the air.
"Can we ever come back?"
"No, you must remember that much"
"I wanted to know for sure"
Urian turned and began to push open the rusting Garden Gate, David looked after, a tear spilling down one cheek. By the time they had pushed the mighty, five yard high Gate open the ground was already falling into nothing, the House of Marble now vanished.
"Its time we should be going"
excuse spelling shenanigans. I have no Word and this one takes too long.
