Still couldn't sleep....

Thought I'd try something out....

Chapter 1

You're wondering who I am. You've just read the prologue, haven't you? You haven't! Go back and read it, then. Go on. Okay, now you're wondering who I am (for all those of you who did read the prologue first, my apologies – I made a straw poll amongst some friends, more than half of them said that they usually don't bother with the prologue in books). So who am I? Who do you think I am? Am I a friend of one of the three people I just described to you? If I am, how do I know so clearly what they were thinking and feeling that day? Am I someone in authority or law-enforcement with pyschological profiles and interview transcripts to draw on? Am I 'the third person narrator'? What if I said that I was none of these people, would you believe me? That's the catch really isn't it, who to believe and why you believe them? When you go to watch a movie, you believe your own eyes, because you see the story unfold in front of you, but who's perspective are you seeing that story from? How many times are you expected to watch the action from a viewpoint that is obviously impossible? I'd be willing to bet that you've never really thought about it before. What's that, you did film studies and yes you had thought about that a lot? Okay – gambling is not science. If I took a bet on each and every one of you I still reckon I'd come in on top. So, is there ever a time when you experience a story without somebody's perspective being a part of the experience? Not really. I suppose you could say that knowing who I am and where I figure in the story would allow you to make some judgements about my telling of it, but then again there are those who believe that perspective is only important for the reader / viewer / experiencing party. For now I'm gonna leave it open. You know that I'm not a cop, I'm not a friend to any of the three characters that you've just met and I'm not some 'third person narrator', unless I'm a liar of course. Assuming I'm telling the truth, there is an explanation for how I know what I know, and although I cannot promise you an unbiased account, I can promise that I will try to stick to the facts as I have them wherever possible. Before this is all over, you're gonna meet me in the story, and I will probably tell you right away, but for now let's not allow who I am to be the issue, let's get back to the news report from that night, or the photographs that have Henry burning the midnight oil, or anything else that might have caught your attention.
